John Tyson Elementary School
I can say this is one of my best experiences in this tirp even thought I was a little bit nerveous but now I´m very happy of have been in that school. Everything is so different than in Panama, a lot of technology, all the student are very polite, when the teacher talks all of them pay attention so the teacher doesn´t need t talk aloud they just clap their hands and everybody stay quiet.
I have learned that one of the methodologies that they use in kinder garden is TPR because there are a lot of spanish speakers and also people that does not speak English as a natieve language, I´ve been in art classes, music classes, P.E clases and it´s so exciting to see how teachers capture the attention of children because one of the principal trouble that we have in Panama is about behavior.
It seems that all these children enjoyed all classes and maybe you will say that it depends on the effectiveness of the teacher but the real thing is that th vast majority of the students in Panama enjoy getting the teacher angry and very difficult for any teacher in Panama to keep the control of the students.
I have seen that one of the most used skills is ´´reading´´ teachers separate the group and join them according to the reading level for example low level in a classroom, and high level in other classroom; there are tow people that come to the classrooms every day and work with the students who can read good and at the end of the week they check the improvement of each of those students.
The teacher explain any topic and ask questions to check understanding, so they use three words ´´Think, Compare and Share´´, students also have a specific time for every task and if they don´t finish in that time then the teacher use any extra time to work in it. Almost all the activities are worked in groups, the teacher write questions in papers and put them around the classroom then each group go to every side like a gallery walks answering the questions.
They also use videos and songs to encourage students, it is so funy see them dancing and singing, teachers also have meetings on tuesday to talk about everything related with the students and if there is something wrong to correct or something good to share. There is a class call PE and in this time students can do whatever they want they can play so this is a time for fun.
All the students are very friendly, they enjoy helping each other, every thursday some students prepare something call ´Snackpack´ this is a pack with dry food for those students who doesn´t have enough food at home.
I think there are many things to learn in those public school, it woul be good that insted of one week, teacher could have two weeks at least so I think one week was not enough.

FYI: The snackpack is not given by the school. It is from a local organization. But the snackpacks are distributed through the schools.
ResponderBorrarCarlos, you have provided excellent descriptions and observations. Could you add some reflection? For example, if students in Panama "enjoy getting the teacher angry", why do you think that happens? Did you learn anything that could help you change that mentality? If so, what?
